Supportive Education - Students with Special Needs

Supportive Education - Students with Special Needs

Brimsham's transition team, comprising of our Supportive Education Department and Pastoral team, liaises with local primaries prior to students transferring to our school. The information gathered is shared with subject teachers and tutors so that everyone is informed of students' needs and difficulties as they transition to secondary school. This information is regularly updated for students on the SEND register.

Key Stage 3

Hand Writing Support – A small group of students receive support before registration twice a week.  This may be identified through a provision on their EHCP or where staff have raised concerns regarding the legibility of a student’s handwriting.

Key Stage 4

Support Option – Students are invited to join this group as part of the option process in year 9.  The support option is for these students who may have missed significant chunks of school for medical reasons and/or staff feel may struggle to complete the full range of GCSE subjects.  It is an opportunity to catch up on missed class work to pre and overlearn lesson content in all subjects.  Students are also able to complete home learning; prepare for assessments in subjects and their GCSE exams in year 11.

ASDAN Food Wise – Students that would like to choose GCSE food but may find all of the content challenging may be invited to join the ASDAN Food Wise course which is a certified qualification and will also boost students’ self-confidence and independence skills.

Key Stages - 3 & 4

Some students receive extra numeracy and literacy support. This is based on their level of need and is determined by the English and Maths department.  From September 2023 school are delivering the Lexonik Advance literacy programme.  This 6 week enrichment programme is an aimed at boosting the reading skills of students that are already competent readers.

Social Skills Groups – We run this group for students with a diagnosis of Autism or social communication needs.  This is led by a highly experienced HLTA.  Students attend for 1 hour per fortnight and follow a programme recommended by a Speech and Language Therapist.

ELSA Support (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) – This is an intervention provided by a trained member of staff.  Students who may require some additional support with their emotional development may be invited to these small, group sessions.

Resilience Lab – This is a drop-in support group. It’s primary purpose is to boost students resilience in school.   It is held once a week during a lunch time and any student can attend.

Lego Therapy – Students that may require some additional social skills support may be invited to small, group sessions.
