Home learning

Home learning is a vital part of a student’s education. It provides opportunities to further class learning and it enables students to develop important skills such as the ability to study, learn information and to work independently.

Home learning at Brimsham can take a variety of forms. It can include tasks designed to consolidate work studied in class or it can be a task that gives a student the opportunity to apply what they have learnt to a new question. Home learning very often involves the teacher directing students to study independently, for example to learn sections of a Knowledge Organiser which the class teacher will later quiz students on. Further examples of Home learning activities include research, revision, collating work and reading marking feedback from their teacher and responding to it.

At Brimsham Green home learning is set regularly and via ‘Satchel One’.

‘Satchel One’ is a simple home learning calendar Brimsham Green School uses to ensure home learning is set and communicated with parents. It is available via the Web, Mobile and Tablet devices. Once parents and students log in, they see a home learning schedule unique to them.

Home learning is set weekly at Key Stage 3 in English, Maths, Science, Languages and Humanities however all other subjects set home learning once a fortnight. As a guide, we expect students to be spending 30 minutes a night on home learning in year 7, rising to 45 minutes in year 9.

At key stage 4 all subjects are expected to set one piece of home learning each week. As a guide, we expect students to be spending up to 2 hours a night on home learning at KS4.

Our study centre is available for students after school until 4.00pm Monday to Thursday, this ‘Home learning’ club is supervised so that students can access support with their studies. For KS4 there is supervised independent study in B20 every day until 3:30pm.  Some students will have this slot showing on their timetable to encourage and support them attending.  In addition to this students can access help and support from their teachers after school or at lunchtimes.
